Regarding the brake cylinder

2026-03-13

Function: Convert pneumatic (or hydraulic) pressure into mechanical thrust, push the brake shoes towards the brake drum (or brake disc), and generate braking force.

Structural characteristics:
Air chamber type (spring brake cylinder): commonly used in heavy-duty trucks, divided into a service brake chamber (front) and a spring energy storage chamber (rear). When parking, the spring energy storage brake is used, and when driving, the air pressure overcomes the spring force to release the brake.
Diaphragm type vs piston type: Diaphragm type has low cost and wide application; Piston type has a longer lifespan and is suitable for high-frequency use.

Common faults:
Diaphragm rupture → air leakage, decreased braking force
Return spring failure → dragging brake, heating
Push rod travel too long → brake clearance too large, needs to be adjusted

Maintenance points:
Regularly check the stroke of the push rod (generally standard 25-35mm)
Check for air leakage sound (soap water test)
Pay attention to waterproofing and antifreeze in winter to avoid water accumulation, freezing, and blockage
